Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Also known as GUM DISEASE - What does it look like?

Gum disease is a swelling of the soft tissue (gums) located around your teeth.  It is caused by the bacteria in plaque that forms on your teeth. Plaque is sticky, colorless, film that accumulates on your teeth. Its that fuzzy feeling you feel on your teeth, first thing in the morning or at night before you go to bed. The bacteria in this plaque have toxins. These toxins and the bodys response to these toxins, cause the gums to swell.

What happens if I dont brush or floss correctly?

If you dont remove the plaque by properly brushing and flossing your teeth daily, this plaque can infect your gums and the bone that supports your teeth. It is likely, you will eventually lose your teeth.

How do I know if I have gum disease?

The symptoms of early gum disease can be painless and its not that easy to see. Sometimes the beginning stages include bleeding when you brush or floss your teeth.  It is possible you dont know which area is bleeding, you just see a little pink when you spit in the sink. Healthy tissue does not bleed.  Gum disease is similar to High Blood Pressure.  You dont know you have it, unless you have your Blood Pressure taken or you have a stroke or heart attack.  The same is true for gum disease. One isnt aware they have it unless they go to the Dentist and the Dentist or Hygienist checks for it, or if your teeth become loose or painful in late stage gum disease because of severe bone loss around the teeth.
